Located below the ‘L’ tracks near the Adams/Wabash station, this family-owned restaurant was the site of a Capone-run speakeasy during Prohibition. Indeed, according to the staff, a door in the dining room leads to paved-up underground tunnels.

Illness and death
Even the little bars which became neighborhood institutions shutter all the time. These processes change a city, often dramatically, and wipe the slate clean every few generations. Considering that, it’s no surprise that we have so little of Al Capone’s Chicago physically present in the architecture of today. Yet, for all his power and influence, Capone was not content to rest on his laurels.
Take a Look Around Al Capone’s Historic Miami House Where he Lived and Died
He joined the Five Points Gang as a teenager and became a bouncer in organized crime premises such as brothels. A conflict with the North Side Gang was instrumental in Capone's rise and fall. Torrio went into retirement after North Side gunmen almost killed him, handing control to Capone.

I’ve told the story of these buildings countless times on our old walking tours. These days, if you want the full scoop, you can reach out to book a custom private tour. When not galivanting around, he stayed at the original Capone family home with his mother, Theresa, and his wife, Mae. The family had relocated here in the 1920s from New York as Al’s particular career path led him to the Windy City.
In 1926, when two of Capone’s sworn enemies were spotted in Cicero, Capone ordered his men to gun them down. Unbeknownst to Capone, William McSwiggin, known as the “Hanging Prosecutor,” who had tried to prosecute him for a previous murder, was with the two marked men and all three were killed. Fed up with Chicago’s gang-dominated lawlessness, the public clamored for justice. The police had no evidence for the murders, so instead they raided Capone’s businesses, where they gathered documentation that would later be used to bolster charges against him of income-tax evasion. In response, Capone called for a “Peace Conference” among the city’s criminals, and an agreement was reached to stop the violence.

Capone Family Home
It was a perfect alibi, Chepesiuk writes, as Capone’s buddies in 1929 Chicago machine-gunned their rivals. Now, 86 years following the so-called Valentine’s Day Massacre, the party-filled Capone mansion is sparkling once more after a property investment firm has restored it. Chicago’s history is so fascinating, you could spend a lifetime uncovering its secrets…I’m willing to give it a try! In US History from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and then pursued doctoral studies in Urban History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I love to learn new aspects of Chicago’s rich history and then share my knowledge as a tour guide with Chicago Detours.

After serving 7.5 years in prison for tax evasion, Capone left Alcatraz suffering from the late stages of syphilis. According to the FBI, he had become mentally incapable of returning to gangland politics and never went back to Chicago. But perhaps the most enduring aspect of Capone’s legacy is the lasting impact he had on American society as a whole. In his relentless pursuit of wealth and power, Capone was not content to operate in the shadows.
An expected bargain was overruled by Federal Judge James Wilkerson, who told Capone, "It is time for somebody to impress upon the defendant that it is utterly impossible to bargain with a Federal Court." Born in 1899 in Brooklyn, New York, to poor immigrant parents, Al Capone went on to become the most infamous gangster in American history. In 1920 during the height of Prohibition, Capone’s multi-million dollar Chicago operation in bootlegging, prostitution and gambling dominated the organized crime scene. Capone was responsible for many brutal acts of violence, mainly against other gangsters. The most famous of these was the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929, in which he ordered the assassination of seven rivals.
According to Paul George, Florida Governor Doyle Carlton told every leader in every county to do what they could to prevent the gangster’s move into Miami. To make matters worse, the Great Miami Hurricane ripped through the city later that year—starting what some say is the beginning of the Great Depression in Miami. As Greater Miami's economy was clawing to come back, Miami Beach was one of the first districts to rebuild itself given its mass tourist appeal. By the mid-1920s Miami Beach was known as the premiere beach resort destination in the United States, according to Paul George, which coincided with the massive real estate boom that transformed the area. The tremendous building boom in Greater Miami reached its peak in 1925 and dramatically collapsed in 1926. A little over a year before the 93-year old historic home would be purchased by European soccer agent Mino Riaola for $9 million in August of 2016, the estate underwent a major renovation spearheaded by Miami-based, Italian-run MB America.
Instead, he sought to infiltrate every level of society, from the halls of government to the boardrooms of industry. Through a combination of bribery, coercion, and outright violence, Capone was able to corrupt the very fabric of American life, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. "This gun was kind of his protection and I think it saved his life on a number of occasions and so he called it his sweetheart," said Diane Capone during an interview with CBS News ahead of that auction. She said that as far as she knew, her grandfather carried the pistol with him everywhere he went. After an attempt on his life in 1925 by rival mobsters, Torrio decided to leave the business and return to Italy, turning over the entire operation to Capone. Scarface again ignored his mentor’s advice to maintain a low profile and instead, moved his headquarters to a plush suite in the Metropole Hotel in downtown Chicago.
According to Miami History, Capone rented a mansion on the exclusive 294-acre island of Indian Creek in 1927 for $2,500 per month. He attained notoriety during the Prohibition era as the co-founder and boss of the Chicago Outfit. “Although we understood and expected that the demolition would happen it is still heartbreaking to see this really important part of our history knocked down and bulldozed,” he said. Our virtual tours uplift meetings and inspire connections for conferences, corporate groups, and universities. As I mentioned at the top, Capone long ago achieved a mythic status here in Chicago.
Developers also dredged the bay to create man-made residential islands extending off the causeways. With only one gated entry and exit to each island and heavy police security, homes were considered to be very secure. During the early development of Miami Beach, causeways – roads built on landfill and bridges – spanned the distance over Biscayne Bay from Miami to Miami Beach. Local 10 News contacted several representatives of the property owner via phone, text and email but had not received a response as of Friday evening. The property was later sold to 93 Palm Residence LLC, managed by Coral Gables accountant Toni Alam, for $15.5 million in 2021. If The Green Mill is one of the most famous sites from Al Capone’s Chicago, then the Exchequer Restaurant & Pub may be one of the most under-sung.
According to Paul George, Florida Governor Doyle Carlton told every leader in every county to do what they could to prevent the gangster's move into Miami. The two-story stucco house is awash in white -- topped with white terra-cotta roof tiles (which were probably originally red), and accented with white awnings. Inside, the renovation of the first floor is mostly complete, while upstairs is still gutted. A large, covered loggia on both sides of the living room flank the house, meant for natural cooling and cross-ventilation in pre-air conditioning days. According to MB America CEO Marco Bruzzi, the property was previously acquired for around $8 million with over $1.4 million in renovations.
